5 common grammatical mistakes we make

5 common grammatical mistakes we make

I read a few of our newspapers and blogs and cringe anytime I see these errors. They are very common errors and also very easy to fix. You just have to know the grammatical rule that applies and you'll find yourself getting it right each time.
It's worth it to speak correctly because how we speak dictates how we are perceived by others.

1. when to use do/does
Simply put "They does not" is incorrect. The correct grammar is They do not. follow these simple rules
He does not see it
She does not see it
They do not see it
We do not see it
I do not not see it
You do not see it

2. When to use worse or worst.
Use worse when comparing two things, people, time etc. for example: This government is worse than the last one
Use worst when comparing 3 or more things, people, time, etc. For example: this government is the worst one ever
Don't say Uche is a worst actress than Ngozi. You are comparing only 2 people so use worse.

3. When to use It's or Its.
Simple rule for this is use it's only if it would be proper to say "it is." It's is the short form of "It is" so if you can't say it is then you shouldn't be saying It's.
for example it is a long way from here or it's a long way from here.
let us find its juncture. you can't use it's there because you can't say let us find it is juncture

4. When to use their or there:
Their refers to a group. Their room is next to my room.
There refers to a place. Let us go there

5. When to use your or you're. This is a somewhat new mistake people are making. But it's very easy to correct. You're is the short form of you are. Only use you're if you could also say "you are." For example you're making me sick or you are making me sick.

Online Comment of the Day

Yahoo posted a story about a pilot that yelled "O my god we are going down" as the plane experienced problems mid flight. Here's a foolish comment that followed.

I was on this flight and they are hiding a lot of stuff from the general public. I was in the last seat next to the flight attendants and I specifically heard the captain yell over the intercom, " oh my god!!! we are going down!!! we're all going to die!!!!".

the flight attendants then put on parachutes and jumped out the back door leaving us all to fend for ourselves. I think it's totally unacceptable that they would do this to us in the middle of a movie.

Funniest Story of the Day: Biden congratulates wrong man in Boston mayor's race

Yahoo! As he watched the returns in Boston's most competitive mayoral race in two decades on Tuesday night, Marty Walsh's cell phone rang.
Biden had intended to call labor activist and state Senator Marty Walsh, who had just been elected mayor of Boston. Instead he was on the line with the Marty Walsh, president of Gateway Public Solutions, a public affairs consulting firm in Boston."A 202 number popped up, and I picked it up. It was Vice President (Joe) Biden. He went right into it, 'Congratulations, Marty, you son of a gun. You did it!'" Walsh recalled on Thursday. "I said, 'Mr. Vice President, you have the wrong Marty Walsh.'"
"He laughed, and he was great about it," said non-Mayor-elect Walsh, who worked in the administration of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and before that for Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Pretty Thorough Husband list

A friend shared this online. I think this list is pretty thorough. Enjoy.

1. He is a practicing believer.
“Do not be yoked together with an unbeliever…For what agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?” 2 Corinthians 6:14-16. Issues and conflict are bound to rise in marriage, so it is crucial that there is a common foundation on which to hold the marriage accountable. The last thing you want to be fighting about is your faith, whether or not to pray and your viewpoints on religion. Believe me, I’ve been there before. It is exhausting.
2. God is the center of his life.
He seeks God’s wisdom in all the decisions he makes.
“With wisdom are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.” Proverbs 8:18-19

Don Lemon under Fire for Supporting Controversial STop and Frisk

AOL during his regular slot on the Tom Joyner show, Lemon said that police were not always very respectful of the people they stopped, but that tampering with the "formula that has reduced crime in New York City" could be very dangerous.
"The question is, would you rather be politically correct or safe and alive?" he concluded.
And quite a few people responded to his question with their own versions of which of two evils would you prefer?
Don Lemon: Would you rather be acceptable to whites and get paid to hate yourself or be liked by the coloreds and get nothing?

Online Comment of the Day

So by now, you've probably heard about Senator Ted Cruz's comment stating that the obamacare website was created by Nigerian e-mail scam artist and you've probably also heard that he has now issued an apology also stating in part that his wife spent part of her life in Nigeria and so he couldn't have meant any harm....
Ok he didn't say so he couldn't have meant any harm but you get the gist. It's the good ole I have black friends so I'm not racist bit.
By the way, I'm Nigerian and I was not offended by what he said. I'm not a 419 criminal so it was pretty obvious to me that he was not talking about me when he made the comment. However, quite a few Nigerians were offended and the Senator has now apoligised.

Here's a funny exchange online about the issue
tbetz
Unfortunately, most of those "419" scams actually do originate in Nigeria, despite the fact that they are named after an article of the Nigerian penal code under which they are supposed to be prosecuted. The scammers are rarely arrested.
