What's Going on in Syria? the Dummy Version

What's going on in Syria? Here's a quick summary so you can have a conversation about it without reading everything

- During what's popularly known as the Arab Spring of April 2011, when peaceful protests started in Egypt and Tunisia, protests also began in Syria

- The Syrian government, under Assad, proceeded to kill its people in order to maintain power

- The whole world condemned the government's actions but in large part, attempts to curb this excesses have been weakened by Russia (which is Syria's most important ally) as well as Iran. Russia is a member of the U.N. Security Council and would essentially veto any attempt to restrain Syria

- Obama has said in the past that the U.S. government would consider any use of chemical weapons by Syria as a line drawn in the sand, which has  given many the impression that Obama would attack Syria if the government uses chemical weapons

- Well, the Obama administration has "high confidence" that Syria has now used such weapons

- And now the talks have begun on whether to go in to Syria.

- On last count, Britain has said it would not to Syria. France would go. Turkey strongly supports going. We know Russia and Iran do not support going. And the rest of the world is doing one level of quiet engagement or the other

- on last count (August 30), Obama made it clear the U.S. would have "no open ended commitment in Syria."

- I agree with Putin on one thing, before using force in Syria, it would be good to think about future casualties." Assad may have killed plenty with chemical weapons but how many will Obama kill with strikes.

- Update on Tuesday September 3. The Obama administration goes before Congress to make the case for an attack.

- Assad plays this really safe and smart by insisting that it did not use chemical weapons and that the U.S. has no proof of same. This tactic has also given Russia something to hang it's refusal to attack hat on as it continues to insist the U.S. has no proof and that an attack would not be wise.

- September 4, 2013: U.S. Senate votes to bomb Syria. Bringing us closer to a place where Obama has to make a decision

- Putin now says he might support a U.N. resolution for some type of military action in Syria

And there you have it. Comments, questions welcome. Check back for more

Saudi Arabia passes its 1st domestic abuse law

Saudi Arabia has passed landmark legislation aimed at protecting women, children and domestic workers against domestic abuse, a human rights official said Thursday, in a move aimed at reducing hidden violence against women in the kingdom.
The "Protection from Abuse" law is the first of its kind in the ultra-conservative country, which has often faced international criticism for lacking laws that protect women and domestic workers against abuse.
The law, approved during a cabinet meeting Aug. 26, came several months after a local charity launched a nationwide campaign to combat violence against women.

Rumor has it: Kim Jong Un's Ex-Girlfriend, Reportedly Executed For Making Sex Tape

AOL Wow, if they did that, then that's just plain evil, but unfortunately, not shocking for that country.

Unconfirmed reports claim the ex-girlfriend of N. Korean leader was executed by firing squad along with 11 others, after the group allegedly made and sold a sex tape.
Hyon Sol Wol, a singer in North Korea's famed Unhasu Orchestra, was reportedly killed by machine gun along with 11 other members of the orchestra and the Wangjaesan Light Music Band, another popular state-run music group in North Korea, according to a report in The Chosun Ilbo, South Korea's largest daily newspaper.
The report, which cites an anonymous source in China, says the group was arrested Aug. 17 for filming and selling a pornographic video featuring themselves. The clip reportedly found its way across the border to China. Their families were forced to watch the execution, which took place three days later, and were then sent to the country's notorious prison camps, the source said.
Hyon was (is) a famous performer whose fame peaked around 2005 with the popular song "Excellent Horse-Like Lady."

2 Kenyan Men Marry Same Woman

Sometimes men have the right idea. While some women fight over who gets to keep one man, these two men have jejely agreed to share one woman

The woman had been having affairs with both men for more than four years and apparently refused to choose between them.
The agreement sets out a roster for Sylvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani to stay in her house and states they will both help raise any children she bears.
Mr Mwendwa told the BBC he loved the woman and said the contract would "set boundaries" and "keep the peace".
Defending the "marriage", Mr Mwendwa told the BBC Focus on Africa program that while he may acting in breach of the law, he had decided to enter into a contract with Mr Kimani to end their rivalry.
"It could have been very dangerous if the other man would have come to her house and caught me... So our agreement is good as it sets boundaries and helps us keep peace."
Mr Mwendwa said her parents had given their blessing, while he is planning to pay the bride price.
The woman, a widow with two children, did not want to be named.

It's the 50th Anniversary of MLK's I Have a Dream Speech

short version of MLK's I have a Dream Speech

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today."

Boy hides in Well of Plane from Benin to Lagos. And Pilot continues flying after notice

I think there is something very wrong with this picture. Even after the pilot knew the boy was possibly in the well of the plane, the pilot still took off, flew the plane and landed. Two obvious issues here. The boy could have died during the short 35 minute flight or the boy might have been strapped. As in, he could have been there to do all aboard great harm. What was the point of continuing the flight?

Passengers and crew had alerted the pilots that a boy was seen running to the plane as it was taxiing to take off Saturday from southern Benin City, Arik Airline spokesman Ola Adebanji said. The pilots alerted the country's aviation agency, he said.

Despite the possible presence of the boy, the pilots opted to continue with their takeoff, Federal Aviation Agency of Nigeria spokesman Yakubu Dati said.
"Immediately upon the departure of the aircraft, FAAN's security did another sweep of the area and found nothing unusual," Dati said.
When the plane arrived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, a boy aged 13 or 14 jumped to the ground from the wheel and was detained by Arik personnel, Adebanji said. He said the teenager probably survived because the flight was short and the plane probably didn't rise above 25,000 feet (7,620 meters).

Nigerian Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo's Response (compared to Bishop Long, Bill Clinton)

Ms. Ese Walter accused him of having a one-week long affair with her. Read More Here.
Since the gist came out last week, people have been waiting for the pastor's response.

In church, the pastor said:

"I'm sure you read somethings about me in the social network. I've been receiving calls from
different people even big people in government... They have been advising me; 'don't talk, we understand'.
Read my lips: Because I know that there are people here that are not part of us:
We are going to speak but we are consulting. We'll come out with a robust reply.....but for now...we ask God he said 'don't talk'.... My destiny is not in anybody's hands..."

The Pastor and His Wife

So pretty much he won't be saying anything about it right now.
His present reaction reminds us of Bishop Eddie Long's response to allegations of sexual relations with some young men He stood before his congregation and said:  "I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man, but I am not the man being portrayed on television. That's not me. That is not me."

Perhaps that might be a good way to go because the whole thing with Bishop Long is largely forgotten now anyway.

Instead of the now infamous lines of President Bill Clinton during the Monica situation where he looked into the camera and said "I did NOT have sexual relations with that woman."

I'll let Khloe Kardashian have the last word. Responding to rumors that Lamar is having an affair and/or is on drugs, today Khloe wrote on twitter:

"Really hard to sit here and listen to people talk sh-t about my family! F-ck you and shame on you! I'm too protective for this sh-t!"
